Tell us about your horse
Mary is an Mary is an 8 year old Hanoverian who came to me as a chronic rearer in May ’18, and we’ve had a bit of a rocky journey so far! I never realised quite how temperamental grey mares were until I got one… Give me a chestnut mare any day! With some very good help, we’ve jumped some double clears in British Showjumping classes and I can’t wait to see what we can do this year. She’s one of the trickiest but most talented horses I’ve ever ridden, so I’ve got my work cut out for 2019!
Tell us a horse joke
What do you do when you aren't with your horse?
To be honest, that doesn’t leave me with much time! When I’m not at the yard, I can be found thinking about what I’ll be doing with Mary later, if Mary’s warm/cool enough, if she’s run out of hay, if she’s in a good mood, if she likes her new shoes, if she’d look nice in a new rug, which saddle cloth I’ll use at the show this weekend, which lorry would she like if I won the lottery, does she need clipping again, does she like the new bale of hay we opened this morning… You know, all normal things!
What do you love about the horsey community?
I love the friends that I’ve made! Some of my best and longest friends I’ve met through horses, be it at livery yards or Pony Club. There can be a real sense of camaraderie and support when you’re surrounded by like-minded people.
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
It has to be horsey people on social media. I’ve sadly been on the receiving end of people saying ‘I hope you fall off and break your neck’ etc etc. It really is awful. I’m lucky to have a really super support crew in my husband, family and friends and I try my best not to let it get to me.
Do your family share your passion of horses?
My mum got me into horses, even though she stopped riding as a teenager. My dad thought it was a great distraction from boys and causing trouble initially, but I think my love for horses totally backfired on him! In his Father-of-the-Bride speech, he said he was most pleased to be handing me, my horses and my expenses over to my new husband… Thanks Dad!
Tell us your funniest horse related story?
I’m not sure how funny these are, but they are totally embarrassing! I was working for a very well known showjumper when someone came to look at the horses. I was riding one horse for him and thought I was doing a splendid job, when I heard the client ask “how old is she?” I thought, “wow, he must think that I’m as great as I think I am!” and quickly blurted out “eighteen!” Well, needless to say he wasn’t interested in my age! Cue a very red face and sticking down the bottom end of the school for a long time.
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
Who is your favourite famous horse?
If I didn’t love mares as much, I would say Edwina Tops Alexander’s Inca Boy, but I definitely wouldn’t turn down the chance to ride Luciana Diniz’s Fit For Fun. That horse just gives everything to Luciana and I’d love to have a partnership like that with Mary.
Read more about Fit For Fun here
How many times have you fallen off?
If only I had a pound for every time I’d hit the deck… I did fall off three times in fifteen minutes once, which I am still quite impressed with but definitely not keen to replicate!
What horsey product can't you live without?
Can I have two? My Kentucky Horsewear Sheepskin girth ties with my Prestige saddle. Both offer such comfort to Mary and I have total peace of mind knowing that both items are the best that money can buy.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?
I thought that no one would be interested in my Facebook page about Mary. It was my Dad that convinced me to set it up back on the 1st July 2018 and I can’t believe the support I’ve received through it. Over 9,000 followers later, I think that people might be enjoying Mary’s journey!

Tell us about your horse
Ariarna is a 14.2hh bay Irish sports mare. I have mostly hacked and jumped her over the 3 and 3/4 years I have owned her. She is coming up to 19years in 2019! We bought her as an all rounder and was a cross country machine in her younger years, however she now is enjoying life as a semi-retired happy hacker.
Tell us a horse joke
What do you do when you aren't with your horse?
As I am only 13 I am currently under home education. When I am not doing school work or with my ponies, I enjoy spending time with family or friends at home or out and about!
What do you love about the horsey community?
I love that we have all dedicated our lives to the most amazing, courageous, brave creature. And despite breaking our backs for them, we still would make the same decision all over again.
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
I dislike the fact that there are so many people that agree with one thing but not with other things, and that sometimes causes people to criticise your decisions and even sometimes look down on you. I guess you cant please everyone!
Do your family share your passion of horses?
My little Sister, Matilda has her own pony, Rio who regularly features on my account, he also has his own instagram account @rio_my_boy . My mum also rides Ariarna occasionally, however she much prefers the mucking out, yard maintenance part and the handling of the horses.
Tell us your funniest horse related story?
About a month or two ago, I was leading my little sister, Matilda on Rio around a small cross pole jumping class, when suddenly at jump number 5 my boot just brushed the jump making me go tumbling down, landing face first into the arena sand! With all of the competitors, judges and even the owner of the premises watching me! What’s worse is I had to get straight back up and keep running afterwards!
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
Who is your favourite famous horse?
William Fox-Pitt’s Chilli Morning! As I loved watching him on the television and even live at events. I adore the effortless way he would jump over the most huge and technical fences and make dressage look like a breeze!

How many times have you fallen off?
Too many times to count! However the horse I have taken the most falls from has to be my old loan pony, Tommy. He was only 5 and very nervous! I was only learning to ride at the time! Even through everything I went through with him I still loved him to pieces!
What horsey product can't you live without?
know its not one thing but I definitely can’t live without it! It’s my red matchy matchy set!

Tell us about your horse
Baby is a 13.3 dark bay, Gypsy Cob, mare. She was a one year anniversary gift from my boyfriend, Tom (how lucky am I?!). We bought her at a year and a half old, and 11 months pregnant. 4 days later she gave birth to a gorgeous little foal, George. Baby was a happy hacker, but turned her hoof to showing and now dressage.
Tell us a horse joke
I put a bet on a horse to come in at 10 to 1 – and it did!
Unfortunately all the others came in at 12.30.
What do you do when you aren't with your horse?
I try to go to the gym minimum of 3 times a week. I also take my dogs for long walks in the countryside – Liss Common is their favourite. Besides that it’s mostly lazy days, chilling at home
What do you love about the horsey community?
The support and encouragement you can receive from complete strangers. Since starting my Facebook page, I’ve had people messaging me all the way from Australia about how well they think me and Baby are doing. It’s such a wonderful feeling!
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
How it can be the complete opposite from the above answer. The very obvious lack of support and encouragement that their can be, even from people who you thought were your friends.
Do your family share your passion of horses?
My mum got into horses for a few years, but that was only because they bought me my first pony – Misty. Besides that I am the only equestrian in the family
Tell us your funniest horse related story?
It’s got to be when my boyfriend was learning to ride and he fell off. He was riding this big 15.2 Highland x Shire. He was cantering along and all of a sudden he just seemed to give up and flopped off the side. Obviously I only laughed when I knew he was okay!
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
Grand Prix dressage rider Natasha Althoff – she does these wonderful Youtube videos and really breaks down certain dressage movements. I’ve learnt and achieved so much more through watching her videos.

What horsey product can't you live without?
Moisturise and condition, it's a great product for looking after Baby's long mane and adding brilliant shine and condition.

Tell us about your horse
I currently own 2 horses:
Balenciaga II (or Rodney at home) is a 7yr old British warmblood by Cheers Cassini. If Rodney was a human he would be a young George Clooney – he’s such a dude and handsome with it. He is also a natural athlete and I’m hoping he is going to be my championship horse. I’m aiming him for the Newcomers regional finals for 2019.
Action Z II (or Princess Zee at home) is a 15yr old Belgian warmblood by Animo. She is the first horse I’ve produced myself, competing in British Novice, Discovery & Newcomers regional finals and at the National Amateur & Veteran Championships.
Tell us a horse joke
Q: What did the horse say when he fell?
A: “Help! I’ve fallen over and I can’t giddyup!”
What do you do when you aren't with your horse?
You’ll find me either in the office where I work full time as an Executive Assistant to fund my expensive showjumping habit or curled up on the sofa at home with my nose in a book.
What do you love about the horsey community?
The unwritten acceptance of looking a mess! Horsey folk appreciate that it’s OK to have hay in your hair (and not know about it). We don’t judge each other. My colleagues in the office on the other hand are not quite as understanding.
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
I hate the riders who think it’s acceptable to coerce the collecting ring stewards into slotting their numbers onto the board – and the stewards who allow them to do it.
Do your family share your passion of horses?
Yes and no. My Mum is my super groom/ show manager / number 1 fan and Dad has the invaluable job of keeping the lorry on the road. As for my brother – he is terrified of horses. I don’t remember the last time I saw him anywhere near a horse.
Tell us your funniest horse related story?
I spent 9 months on an event yard learning an all-round equine education. My boss sent me to a dressage competition on my 14yr old Grade B showjumper Smartie Sometimes. Half way through the test Smartie decided to spice things up a bit, sized up the white boards at A and made a run for it. After exiting the arena, the judge got out of the car and told my boss off for laughing at the competitors! He was in hysterics. Smartie was excused from dressage competitions after that.
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
Scott Brash. He has such an affinity with his horses – you can tell that they are jumping for him and not because of him. He always pats his horses at the end of each round too and you can tell that it’s not just because the cameras are watching him.
Read more about Scott Brash Here
Who is your favourite famous horse?
Holly Smith’s ride Quality Old Joker. He has a fabulous way about him and I love his wily expression.
Read more about Quality Old Joker here.
How many times have you fallen off?
Countless! I even managed to fall off in the car park at Addington Manor after I had finished competing…whilst dismounting!
What horsey product can't you live without?
Botanica Natural Herbal Cream. I use it on everything and everyone, horse, dog or human. I call it the Magic Cream because it just works
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?
When I was 7yrs old I danced at the renowned Sadlers Wells Theatre in Clerkenwell, London as part of a dance competition. I was a church mouse!

Tell us about your horse
Zenna (Marina Bay) is 16.3hh Warmblood Mare. I’ve owned her for 2 and half years and we compete in British Showjumping and the Royal Navy and UK Armed Forces Showjumping Team.
Zenna is a gentle giant and loves Crosscountry, Bananas, having her photo taken, and boys! She is the easiest horse to deal with and is the ultimate amateurs horse!
Her dislikes are being bathed, lack of bananas and not enough attention (mainly from boys!)
Tell us a horse joke
What do you call a scary female horse?
A NightMARE!
What do you do when you aren't with your horse?
I’ve just moved to Somerset, with my new job role. So when I’m not at work or with Zenna, I am usually trying to help renovate the new house, which consists of telling my boyfriend what I want done, making tea and entertaining our two Sausage dogs Cheddar and Gizmo.
What do you love about the horsey community?
Friendship and support.
At the end of the day, we all have similar ambitions, to spend time with our horses and achieve our goals.
Our sport can be stressful at times and you need support from friends, this can sometimes be hard to find in the sport, but if you can find those likeminded people, you have friends for life!
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
Those who treat horses badly, or blame the horse for a bad round.
We all make mistakes and get frustrated at times but we should never take it out on the horse. They should always come first, you are a team!
Do your family share your passion of horses?
Not at all. My mother is actually allergic to them! and my father is a Cattle farmer who always told me horses cost money and never make money, and that they ruin his fields!
Neither of my parents can understand why I love the Sport so much but that didn’t stop them buying me my first Pony at the age of 4 and taking me to shows. I will always be grateful to them for that.
Tell us your funniest horse related story?
At 4 years of age, after watching Black Beauty and falling in love with a black pony in the stud next door, feeding it over the fence for weeks (and naming it Black Beauty), I was devastated to find out it had already been sold to Ireland.
The day they came to pick her up I cried my eyes out and so my dad went down to negotiate with the Irish gentleman to buy the pony before they put it on the lorry to take it away. When they saw me crying they doubled the price on an already overpriced, unbacked filly…!
We still laugh about how much my dad paid for that pony, but she was worth every penny! She was the best first pony any little girl could wish for!
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
The Queen! She may not be an equestrian athlete but her love for horses and dedication to equestrianism is incredible.
Anyone who still rides at the age of 92 is and inspiration to me. And of course, she’s my boss!!
You can read more about Her Majesty the Queen's passion for horses here.
Who is your favourite famous horse?
Pippa Funnells Supreme Rock!
I grew up watching Badminton horse trials on the TV and I always remember loving him and telling my dad I wanted to own a horse like him one day!
He was part of the GB winning team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics andI was glued to the TV in 2003 when he went on to win the Rolex Grand Slam with Pippa Funnell with his win at Badminton.
Read more about Supreme Rock here.
How many times have you fallen off?
When I broke in Beauty (mentioned above) at age 4, I had never had riding lessons, so I fell of pretty much everyday.
But since taking up riding again 2 and a half years ago I’ve not actually fallen off that much!
Zenna is a superstar and she always seems to keep me in the saddle…but I always make sure I wear sticky breeches just in case. Maybe my many falls as a child made me learn to sit a bit better!!
What horsey product can't you live without?
My Montar Breeches! They are flattering, sticky and don’t break the bank! I couldn’t like without them and I’m pretty sure I own the whole range!
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?
Before I got back into horse riding in 2016 I used to compete in 2-man Bobsleigh for the Royal Navy! I think it’s fair to say I like an adrenalin rush mixed with a bit of danger!

Remmi is a 14.2 Traditional Gypsy Cob gelding.
I’d say he is the epitome of an all rounder and we’ve pretty much had a go at everything! Apparently, horseback archery is his forte and he’s got the perfect canter for it.
Competition wise we are most frequently seen strutting our stuff within the white boards but we love to pop round a show jumping course for a bit of fun.
Tell us a horse joke
What does it mean if you find a horseshoe? Some poor horse is walking around in his socks.
You may or may not be able to tell that jokes are most certainly aren't my forte. More often than not I forget the punchline!
What do you do when you aren't with your horse?
Working! I work as Cabin Crew so half my week is spent at home (with the horses) and in the other half I’m off travelling the world to some exotic (or not so exotic!) destinations.
What do you love about the horsey community?
The support and encouragement you receive at competitions, often from complete strangers. It’s amazing what a smile or a simple “good luck” can do for your nerves and confidence.
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
How quickly people are to criticise, put you down and get involved. Of course constructive criticism is always welcome but I find many people are often far too quick to offer you their two pence!
My biggest bug bear is people getting involved in a situation that has absolutely nothing to do with them, doesn't mean anything to them and doesn't affect them in the slightest.
Do your family share your passion of horses?
My mother and sister both grew up having their own ponies. My dad was completely non-horsey until he had to step in as part time dad to my horse when I first began flying. Luckily he was a good apprentice and it didn't take too long to train him up and he quickly learnt that blankets were in fact called rugs!
Tell us your funniest horse related story?
Oooo this is a tricky one!
One fairly funny story that springs to mind is one that relates to my non-horsey dad. It was his first day in his new role as ‘part time dad to Opal’ and I was giving him the tour. First stop was the small, individual store room shortly followed by a walk down to the stables. On the way down he points to some of the stables and asks “was it more expensive for a bigger stable?” Turns out he thought the tiny, narrow store room was Opal’s stable! I would have loved to have seen him try to convince her to go in there!
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
Ben Maher
I’ve always admired how quiet and still he is when he rides, he looks completely in tune with all the horses that he rides even the tricky ones!

Who is your favourite famous horse?
Caroline Powell’s Lenamore! His bold attitude around the biggest of XC tracks and his zest for life is something that always caught my eye and he was one that I wouldn’t have minded a go on myself.

How many times have you fallen off?
Too many! The majority have been off Remmi too (the quiet, anyone can sit on him cob!)
What horsey product can't you live without?
Cowboy Magic Detangler & Shine! It leaves his mane and tail feeling so silky and soft I’m often half tempted to put some in my own

What do you call a donkey with 3 legs? Wonkey Donkey
What do you do when you aren't with your horse?
When I’m not riding, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family and the odd glass of prosecco!!
What do you love about the horsey community?
I love the team spirit and the encouragement between riders particularly at competitions. I have made so many good friends through the horsey community.
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
The horsey community at times can be negative and highly critical, however I think this happens in all communities and I’m lucky to be surrounded by positive and supportive people.
Do your family share your passion of horses?
Luckily for me, Mum and I share a passion for horses. Mum was involved with polo ponies when I was a child so I have been brought up around horses, unfortunately my husband and brother are not fans of horses and prefer car horse power!!
Tell us your funniest horse related story?
As a child I had a cheeky 12.2 palomino, who I enjoyed cantering up the hill field, on one particular day I cantered up the field and as I walked back down he got excited and bucked me off. Mum was a great believer in putting me back on and telling me to get on with it so I was put back on and off we went back up the field and the same happened again! I was put back on a total of three times before Mum finally decided my pony was a little fresh, we tried again the following day and he was fine!!

It has to be Scott Brash, he is a beautiful calm, quiet rider and I admire this when faced with jumps off 1.6 metres.

We mainly do dressage, competing at Novice & Elementary. We have qualified for the Regional League Finals & the Racehorse to Dressage Horse Finals at the Retraining of Racehorse (RoR) National Championships at Aintree in August. No Answer Given
What do you do when you aren't with your horse?
I spend most of my non-horse time trying to fit in my boyfriend and a social life.
What do you love about the horsey community?
I love being part of a team. Since I've been involved with RoR competitions & activities I've made loads of friends and feel like we're all incredibly supportive of each other. There's something great about turning up at a show or clinic & knowing you're always going to have a friend there.
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
I don't like people who are judgemental or negative. Constructive criticism can be really useful but I find some people struggle with the ‘constructive’ part & are more focused on the ‘criticism’.
Do your family share your passion of horses?
My mum doesn't ride but often comes to shows with me & is awesome at rolling Chilli's travel bandages and my aunt has always had horses. The rest of the family have more sensible hobbies.
Tell us your funniest horse related story?
The first year I competed at the RoR National Championships I'd competed over three days and been traveling Chilli there each day. I got home very late on the Sunday night, unloaded and went straight home as I was shattered.
I spent the following day (bank holiday Monday) at the yard sorting tack out, cleaning the trailer and unpacking. I got in my car and headed home for an early night. Halfway home I got a phone call from another livery asking if I'd forgotten anything. I was adamant I hadn't, I'd done everything. It was only when she asked me if I knew where Chilli was that I realised I’d mucked out and put his tea, net, etc in his stable but left poor Chilli stood round the corner. He was tied up waiting patiently for me to put him to bed and I was halfway home!
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
Louise Robson of Thoroughbred Dressage.
I've had several lessons with Louise and have a huge amount of respect for how she adapts to each different horse and rider that she trains. Her own team of horses are also a real credit to her training and abilities

Too many to count! I used to do a lot more jumping than I do now so I used to do a lot more falling off. I've not fallen off yet this year so am probably overdue.

My trailer! It's only a really old Ifor Williams but I've waited a long time to have my own & it gives me & Chilli the freedom to go where we want, when we want.

Skye I can do anything with, from strutting her stuff in the white boards at BD to galloping along the beach, she’s just brilliant we love her very much.
Katy my baby is enjoying herself living out at the moment with friends and just loving life being 3.
I also ride a bay called Leo who I ride and compete for his owner.

What's black and white and eats like a horse? A zebra!
What do you do when you aren't with your horse?
I work full time for the NHS, I also have a second Job working at a bar. When I'm not at work or down the yard I spend time with my boyfriend, he’s into his motor cross so i'll go and watch him out on the track.
What do you love about the horsey community?
The biggest thing I love about the horse community is how it forms friendships; I have met people through the horses that I would call friends for life now.
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
What I don’t like about the horse community is how some people can be really negative. Everyone has a bad day or something that can be improved so to me it’s really important that everyone encourages one another.
Do your family share your passion for horses?
Yes, I couldn’t do what I do without my parents, my mum and dad will truck us to the other side of the country if needed. They help me out whenever they can and they have had to learn through plenty of time down the yard what to do and how to handle the horses.
My family are really supportive and that means a lot to me.
Tell us your funniest horse related story?
I’d not long had Skye; I was just about to get on her in the school when the step broke underneath me, and crash I went right under Skye’s belly.
My mum couldn’t stop laughing at me, and Skye turned to say “what are you doing down there?”
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
Honestly; the fact I love Dressage it would have to be Charlotte Dujardin, she’s an inspiration to us all.
Read more about Charlotte Dujardin here.
If I could choose a second person it would be Lottie Fry, she is an amazingly talented rider, she’s really down to earth to speak too and she rides Katy’s dad Everdale... I look up to her massively.
Read more about Lottie Fry here.
It would have to be leg and body whitener, both my horses have white legs so it’s a must, I have OCD about turnout they have got to look their best!

Villager (aka Bexxi) is owned by the lovely Jackie Rowland who kindly lets me ride him. He is 16 now so certainly knows his job and looks after me very well. He may not be the most talented/athletic horse on the RAF Equestrian Team but he certainly has the biggest heart and always tries his very hardest to keep the fences up! He’s also very handsome!

How do you make a small fortune out of horses? Start off with a large fortune!
What do you do when you aren't with your horse?
When not working as a Logistics Officer in the RAF I’m usually running around after my 2 young boys Jack (5) and Oliver (3) (often trying to stop World War 3!)
What do you love about the horsey community?
The horses! And the passion that the people have for the horses.
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
I think that whatever community you involve yourself in there will be positives and negatives, ups and downs, but I am personally very lucky to have a lot of supportive people around me and the equine professionals that I use are excellent.
Do your family share your passion for horses?
I grew up on a riding centre in Shropshire which my parents ran so I guess horses were in my genes. My sister still also rides and works with horses. Now a Mum myself I try and get my boys riding when I can so hopefully they can share my passion; I’m not sure whether that will happen though – at the moment they seem much more interested in the tractors and quad bikes at the stables!
Tell us your funniest horse related story?
When I think back to my childhood bombing around the countryside on my ponies with my friends, it really was a fantastic way to grow up. We were a little wild though I think now looking back! We were always trying to make each other’s pony buck or daring each other to jump random gates, fences, hedges, round bales etc – whatever we came across that looked jump-able! One occasion that particularly stands out was when I dared my sister Becky to jump a fence which didn’t have much room after it – her pony turned sharp left on landing and my sister went straight-on, landing in the biggest patch of nettles you’ve ever seen. As kids, we of course thought it was hilarious that she was covered in nettle stings! It’s a bit mean but still makes me chuckle now! Sisterly love!
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
I’ve recently had some lessons with Geoff Billington and even in a short space of time I think he has made a real difference to my riding – I think he’s a fab instructor, and rider of course!

How many times have you fallen off?
WAY WAY too many times to count! When I was a kid I thought the ride was boring if it hadn’t caused at least one person to fall off! Luckily none of my falls have been too serious although it does hurt a lot more these days!
What horsey product can't you live without?
I’m really love a dry rug which Villager has. Being grey, he gets bathed A LOT! He dries so quickly with this rug on and it keeps him nice and clean. I also hate riding without a good pair of gloves.

Alfie ... My 14.1 12 year old little native mixture . I've owned Alfie for 6 years, after owning him for a year or so I was intrigued about where he came from and to see if I could trace any breeding as he has so many similarities from a previous new forest pony I had as a child. I wrote letters to everyone in his passport to discover he was rescued as a two year old and hadn't had a very good start in life , after his rescue he was passed around a it until I bought him as a 5/6 year old.
He's not the same pony he was when I first got him, a lot of hard work and changes but I wouldn't change him for the world and he's definitely with me for life, he's a special boy and a part of the family.

What do you do when you aren't with your horse?
When I'm not with Alfie I'm usually working , to fund his needs hahaha , or doing things with my partner and our dog (gotta share the love between them all ) 😀
What do you love about the horsey community?
I've always loved the horse world. I fell in love with them at about 3 years old and although you get the odd "bitchy" characters, the majority of friends I've made through horses over the years are lovely and very supportive. Cheering on friends, sharing, helping each other and seeing good results is lovely to see and makes you feel proud that your hard work pays off!
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
No Answer
Do your family share your passion for horses?
My parents aren't horsey people but my aunties have had horses and as a child I lived round the corner from the riding school. That started my love for horses at 3 years old. My Mum and Dad let me have my own ponies and helped me as a child even though they aren'r horsey.
They bought me a couple of ponies as I grew up and when I turned 18 they left me to the horses on my own in which I carried on my love for them, and now at 26 I couldn't imagine a life without them.

Here is a little brief of our day we took the Supreme Championship at Homestead Riding Club
After going to homestead as a child, I've always gone to have fun! I never thought I'd do so well and I've never taken it too seriously, after all my little rescue pony would never win all the pretty show ponies would he?
So we went to do our favourite event and pop round the working hunter classes. He was having an amazing day, so we put our big brave pants on and even braved the 95cm class. We had odd unlucky fences down in some classes over the day, but we also had some wins so we decided to enter the championship, and we took reserve champion in the working hunter.
I then booked us in to equitation and the plan after that was to go home, but we won equitation and everyone then told me I had to stay and do championship for ridden, so I did.
As a massive shock I won it! So we went into the supreme championship not expecting in a million years to win it and a friend also in it said to me "you've got this" I shook my head and said don't be daft.
Much to my surprise we got it and took supreme champion! Never have we ever done so well all in one day! I was bursting with pride, and it gave me so much determination to keep up the hard work. No matter what pony, what lessons , where your from, what you have , nothing matters other than your determination as a team, and your bond as a team!

What do racehorses eat? Fast Food
What do you do when you aren't with your horse?
I live and work in London so I travel between the Cotswolds and London a lot. I am also in the Army Reserves so any weekends I am not riding I am doing that.
What do you love about the horsey community?
I love the sense of community, We were at Keysoe at the start of June with the team and people we had never met came up and said hello and we met a lovely lady called Jill who was running the pocket and by the end of the first day it felt like she was part of our team and its people like that, that make this sport amazing.
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
I think sadly with this age of Social media that we have a lot of side line commentators who say things without knowing the facts. Its something I talk about with the team because they have the added thing of riding in Uniform and to an extend it leaves them exposed. Often you see a photo caught in a moment on line and the back lash is awful, that photo does not tell the whole story. I think if people can’t say anything nice they shouldn’t say anything at all. If something needs investigating its for the governing bodies with their “experts” to look at not the public.
Do your family share your passion for horses?
Yes very much so. My Mum used to work for Raymond Brooks Ward running Olympia and Horse of the year Show, she also showjumped, evented, team chased, hunted and showed a lot. My father loved his hunting and is retired from riding now, he even did a few Point to points. My grand parents are also very involved still well into their 90’s . They also hold a record at the Royal Welsh for coming 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th in the same Section D class and have had both the supreme champion and reserve at the show. My Grandfather is the most amazing horseman and I learnt so much from him and my Mum. My Grandparents also still have National Hunt horses in training and still occasionally sneak off and buy more horses!
Tell us your funniest horse related story?
I had a few naughty ponies in my time, they are a lot smarter than horses. We had a pony called “Boozy” that my brother rode who could open Coca Cola bottles and drink the contents, I also had a pony called “Sprat” that was very good at swiping me off under low lying branches. He did earn the nickname “Sprat the Pratt”.
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
That’s so hard I grew up in Ireland in a golden age of Irish show jumping so the likes of Eddie Macken, Paul Darragh, Jessica Kurten were idols. I think today we have so much talent out there with the likes of Bertram Allen, Michael Duffy, Cain O'Conor, the Breen brothers, we are in another Golden age. I also admire people like Edwina Alexander Topps and young up and coming Anna Kellnerova.
Who is your favourite famous horse?
Again that’s hard but if it’s a current horse I would love to have a ride on Inca Boy ridden by Edwina Alexander Topps that horse is just amazing to watch. Past horses it would have to some of the Irish greats like Cruising or Boomerang.

What do you love about the horsey community?
I think being a horse owner provides great values and morals. Sharing a large amount of time with like-minded people is always enjoyable so I love that the horse community is its own little world.
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
The critical and judgemental attitude of some equestrians. We should all help and encourage each other!

Yes and No. My love of horses began from my Dad’s love of racing and inspired me to ride. When I had my own pony and first horse they would both muck in and get involved but now they are older, a warm sofa is far more appealing or so they say! They still both love horses though.

The amount of support and messages I received from friends and strangers via social media went I couldn’t even consider giving up. They really helped me through a very difficult time.
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
There isn’t really anything I dislike, but I feel we could support each other more. Obviously we are competitive, but being supportive and helping everyone achieve the best results we can is also important
Do your family share your passion of horses?
100%. My Mam started me riding at 3 and my Dad has done his fair share of mucking out/ dragged through the mud/ rescuing me when I’m stuck. They now can’t help as much as William is too big for them to reach with tack or a headcollar!
Tell us your funniest horse related story!
I have a brilliant photograph of William competing at his first ever competition – Myerscough Premier league. The picture is me and him calmly leaping out of the arena over the flowers at C. Mortifying!!!!
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
To say Charlotte DuJardin is too predictable but her results are amazing, Isabelle Werth can just create results out of a normal horse as she is so talented; but for what he has done for the sport as a whole it has to be Mr Hester

Who is your favourite famous horse?
I have a soft spot for Mistral Horjis – that is what Wills and I will look like when we grow up!
Read more about Mistral Horjis here
How many times have you fallen off?
Too many to mention – worst injuries are a dislocated jaw and torn medial ligaments (separate falls). Yet to fall off Wills for the first time yet, totally tempting fate
What horsey product can’t you live without?
Chalk – we have four white socks and like to dazzle with our twinkle toes.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself!
I have just been announced as a brand ambassador for Forces Equine to promote the organisation as a serving police officer.
Well done Lesley you have completed the 10 minutes in the tackroom challenge. If you would like to take part in the challenge, email info@equissimo.co.uk.

This week in the saddle we have Sarah Penney. You can follow Sarah on her Facebook and Instagram pages.
Tell us about your horse!
I am very lucky to own 2 beautiful greys!
Soli is a 16.1 Thoroughbred x Irish Draught 16 year old mare. I have been very fortunate to have owned her since she was 18months. She has truly taught me how to ride. Soli is a typical mare and will ALWAYS greet you with her ears back and nostrils flaring but she is the ultimate jumping machine. Her greatest achievement to date is winning a Puissance competition reaching a scary height of 4'9!!
Harry is a 17hh 9 year old gentle giant, he is also Soli's half brother! We have been a partnership for 4 years and it has certainly had its ups and downs! Due to Harry's size he has taken several years to develop in to the horse he is now! This season we took on the challenge of riding at BE90 where we managed to qualify for a Regional Final! Next year we aim to ride at BE100! I feel very proud to say that I have taught both my horses everything they know all by myself!
Tell us a horse joke!
What did the horse say when it fell? ..... I've fallen and I can't giddyup!
What do you do when you aren’t with your horse?
I work full time as a veterinary receptionist funding this very expensive passion of mine! I also spend a lot of time with my friends and boyfriend Clint exploring the Cornish Coast.
What do you love about the horsey community?
I love that the horsey world is such a close knit little family. When times get tough everyone truly rallies together and work as a team! I have met some of my bestest friends through horses as well which I love, they all share the same passion and love for horses as I do!
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
It's starting to become too serious now! The fun and friendliness has unfortunately disappeared from most local shows and events. What's wrong with being nice and supportive to one another. We're all in the same boat, right?
Do your family share your passion of horses?
I am very lucky to have had such a supportive family when it comes to my horses. Sadly I have now lost my mum but she would never miss a show and would always help out! My dad still to this day will drive me to every show and will always do my stud holes - yes I am very spoilt but very grateful!
He has rarely missed a show out of my 18 years of competing. I consider myself to be very lucky to have such amazing support!
Tell us your funniest horse related story!
Hmm... I'm not very good with funny stories but this is the most memorable lately! Harry is very well known for just picking stuff up and carrying it around - he is in theory just a big hairy kid! A couple weeks ago dad was in the horses shelter cutting up logs for the burner when Harry decided he would let himself in to see what was going on.... As you can imagine he didn't just stand there and watch! Next minute he was picking up the wood from dads pile and just walking away with it haha! He is the type of horse who always has to know what's going and and always loves to lend a helping hand whether it's wanted or not....
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
Michael Jung - I just love watching him ride! He makes everything look so effortless and is such a kind rider. I have a lot of time for people who pat and praise their horses when they've done well!

How many times have you fallen off?
Far too many times - Most recent being in September when both Harry and I took a tumble in the cross country phase of our Regional Final!
What horsey product can’t you live without?
Stain remover and blue shampoo!! Got to love a grey!
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself!
I have a massive phobia of frogs!! I turn in to a girly screaming mess! When I travelled Australia a few years ago they were everywhere!! I even got trapped in a toilet as there was one outside my cubicle door.... Yes, sadly I had to be rescued!
Well done Sarah you have completed the 10 minutes in the tackroom challenge. If you would like to take part in the challenge, email info@equissimo.co.uk.
]]>This week in the saddle we have Andrea Parker. Andrea is better known as The Sand Arena Ballerina, and you can follow her progress on her website Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.
Tell us about your horse!
My horse Nonie (aka Mon Ami) is a 12yo warmblood x thoroughbred is currently training medium/advanced. I’ve had her for over seven years which has enabled me to learn her many quirks and develop a really strong relationship with her.
Tell us a horse joke!
What did the mare say to her foal?
It’s pasture bed time.
What do you do when you aren’t with your horse?
When I am not riding Nonie, maintaining her paddock or cleaning gear, I’m either working as a dietitian or indulging in my other favourite pastime - blogging.
What do you love about the horsey community?
I love the never ending capacity to learn in this sport. I don’t think there are any good riders who would ever claim to know it all. Fortunately, unlike many other sports we also have the potential for a long riding career.
What do you dislike about the horsey community?
I dislike the nastiness that can be present in the equestrian world. One of the challenging aspects of this sport is that there will always be someone with more than you. More talent as a rider, more talented horses, more access to training and competitions. I think that this can sometimes bring out the worst in people.
Do your family share your passion of horses?
My mum is an incredibly passionate horsewoman, it’s thanks to her that I started riding. We often joke that the horsey obsession must be genetic. My father on the other hand prefers boats to horses, but has always been exceptionally supportive of me pursing my passion.
Tell us your funniest horse related story!
One day whilst staying with my cousin we decided to take her horses for a swim in the dam. We jumped on bareback and made our way down to the dam. We had been riding around playing in the water for a while and I for some reason had ridden out of the water. I went to go back in but my horse started backing up and I just couldn’t get him to go forward. He kept backing up until he finally hit the electric fence of the nearby paddock which pretty quickly got him going forward again. Best of all we caught it all on camera!
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
I am a huge fan of Laura Graves. Her ability to make riding such a massive and big moving horse look effortless is a tribute to her skill.

Who is your favourite famous horse?
That is such a tough question to answer as there are so many incredible animals in this sport. Of course I love Valegro and Verdades.

How many times have you fallen off?
More than I can remember these days. Some of them have been pretty serious resulting in nasty concussions, while others have been harmless and even funny. I recall once leaning over the side of my horse to try and pick something up, losing my balance and landing on my butt.
What horsey product can’t you live without?
My favourite equestrian product that I couldn’t be without is definitely my helmet. Safety is so important to me.

What do you love about the horsey community?

What do you dislike about the horsey community?
I can’t stand people who treat their horses as ‘tennis rackets’, a horse is not primarily a piece of sports equipment . There’s nothing nice about seeing a horse being a victim of a rider’s ego. The mental and physical welfare of the horse is so important, the horse’s cooperation shouldn’t be taken for granted.
Do your family share your passion of horses?
My mother is still involved with horses, both as a showing and a BD dressage judge. She has competed in many different disciplines in the UK and abroad.
Tell us your funniest horse related story!
No so good with funny stories, most of the humour around my horses is rather physical! Here’s a cute but tragic one.
One of the Welsh Cobs that I showed as a teenager, who cribbed continuously, used to have ‘pets’. For many years she had a cat that lived with her. This cat used sleep on her and use her as a hunting viewing platform. When she wasn’t wearing rugs and cribbed the cat used to stick its claws in her (she would briefly stop but never eject her cat). She was, however, quite needle shy so when our vet came to do her annual vaccinations, he pulled the rug back, making the cat hang on as he jabbed her. She didn’t even flinch! I thought it was a niffy little trick.
In later years the cob acquired a pet rooster that took up residence in her stable. He was an elderly fellow and one morning we found him flattened in her bed. I hope he died before she sat on him. That particular cob, somehow, used to attract other animals to live with her.
Who is your favourite famous horse rider?
Reiner Klimke – always! Beautiful to watch, no nasty pictures, no ‘moments in time’ just beautiful harmonious riding.
Read more about Reiner Klimke here.
Who is your favourite famous horse?
Verdades with Laura Graves as he looks the spit of my younger horse Wonky. Love that stronger type of horse and their harmonious but very powerful performances.
Read more about Verdades here.
How many times have you fallen off?
Too many!!! I have to be careful as my joints shatter these days. One of the disadvantages of Rheumatoid Arthritis in the neck is that it makes the vertebrae fragile so the risk of a broken neck or spinal cord injury is increased.
What horsey product can’t you live without?
I am very particular about saddles! I love my Bliss of London Paramour dressage saddles. They are so well made to fit each of my horses. It is no good being unstable, out of balance or uncomfortable in the saddle as a rider and it doesn’t do the horse any good either.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself!
I used to be a rock guitarist before my RA stopped my fingers working well enough.
