Based in the beautiful county of Corwall, Zoe and her horse Ali are taking on the eventing and showjumping world and winning.
For updates on Zoe and Ali visit their Equissimo Blog page.
I started riding Ali early in 2016. Ali is a 17-year-old Arab gelding who loves nothing more than evading being caught or leaving the field. Ali had been turned away for almost seven years and was looking for a new rider.
I remember my first ride on Ali it was certainly pretty unforgettable. We went for a gentle hack so we could get to grips with each other but Ali had something very different on the agenda. We spent most of our time spinning and jumping up in the air not my idea of a chilled out hack but I knew that something special was happening and a great partnership was being forged.
In the beginning jumping Ali was like something you would see at a rodeo. Ali would buck and rear like a wild horse but I wasn’t going to give in. We attempted to pop a few 2’3 fences just to see what he was made of but again Ali had his own agenda exploding like a bomb throwing me into the wings…. Ouch.
Being brave or insane, we entered a show only a few weeks later, the 80cm class at the Royal Cornwall showground held by the Newquay riding club and WON!!.
I knew Ali was special and had the ability to do great things so I persevered building on my partnership with Ali and went on to compete regularly.
We won 5 cups in one season and over 25 rosettes and attended British Riding Club (BRC) qualifiers coming 2nd in the Novice class out of 40 competitors. In 2017 we qualified for the BRC championship in Lincoln and Equissimo are supporting Newquay Riding Club fundraising to get 4 teams to the championships.
Ali gives me so much joy and he keeps me on my toes. He’s a huge diva, full of sass and has his own opinion on everything, and without any type of supplement to calm him or any kind of force, we simply just ride through his sassy moments and he’s ready for the job.
